Last year saw the Coburg Tigers Football Club in conjunction with Hume, Moreland City Councils and the Football Integration Development Association form a brand new football team.
The Football Integration Development Association provides a regular, competitive figure of Australian Rules football for players with an intellectual disability. Its main aim is to provide access to football for anyone in Victoria with an intellectual disability. Currently almost four hundred players are involved in the program within the state.
With little resources and numbers to get the season going we approached many businesses to get on board to lend a helping hand. One pair of hands came in the form of club jackets for the players to feel like they belonged to a real football club. Supreme Caravans were that helping pair of hands. To see the look on all of their faces when they came up one by one to receive their jacket was amazing and touching.
With a wonderful coach in John Haller along with his family assisting in many areas we have been so successful during our first year and have grown from 8 players to 28 players which will mean increasing to two teams this year.
So please if you know someone or know of someone with an Intellectual disability and especially if they love their AFL rules football please let us know. Male and females over the age of 14 are most welcome or anyone that would like to volunteer their time to get involved will find it the most rewarding thing they will ever do. This includes players, supporters, volunteers including water boys and team helpers.
