If you have never bought a used caravan before but are looking into it, you might be unsure about what kinds of questions you should be asking the dealer or owner to ensure you don’t get ripped off. Regardless of whether you are buying a used van privately or from a dealer, there are some things you should always ask:
- When arranging a viewing time (so, before you have even gone to see used caravans), ask the seller whether you will be able to give the van a thorough once over at the viewing. Make it clear that you want to check everything on the used van, inside and out.
- After arriving at your viewing, ask to view the registration history of the used caravan. Most people will keep copies of this, however, if this was not the first owner of the van there may be some gaps in registration history.
- Ask the seller whether the used caravan has been involved in any accidents, small or large. If the answer is yes, ask to see the details of the accidents, such as the reports or repair details. Some people also like to be shown exactly where on the van repairs have been made so they can judge the quality for themselves.
- Ask the seller about the availability of spare parts. If the dealer or owner cannot answer your question, contact the manufacturer to find out. There is nothing worse than owning a van you cannot get fixed.
If you are satisfied with the answers given by the dealer or owner, then carry out any other checks you would like to (such as for damp) and then make your decision. You may quickly find yourself the proud owner of a bargain used caravan.
